What the listings tell you
- Fitness level: “suitable for all fitness levels”, “moderate” or “high”. Moderate usually means walking on uneven ground or climbing in and out of boats.
- Health conditions: many adventure tours are not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or heart conditions because of jolts, altitude or effort.
- Accessibility: some listings say whether the tour, the transport and the surfaces are wheelchair accessible. Few do, so ask.
Tips
- Boat cruises, submarine rides and helicopter flights are often the easiest: little walking and seated most of the time.
- Ask about steps to board boats and vehicles, and whether a crew member can help.
- Check with your doctor before activities flagged for heart or back conditions.
